After School Programs

Surfing is one of Sanibel Sea School’s favorite activities! During our after-school surfing session, we’ll learn how to paddle a surfboard, turn around, and pop up on our feet. Maybe we’ll even catch a small wave or two! There’s no better way to spend some time after school than hanging 10 with your friends.

Seine nets are long nets that glide through the water to gently scoop up sea creatures. Taking inspiration from the native Calusa, we’ll use seine nets in different environments around Sanibel to see what we can find. Whether we glide them through seagrass or pull them over a sandbar, we’re sure to catch fish, crabs, comb jellies, and other exciting creatures — every net we pull up is different!

We love getting creative with the natural materials around the island. Sticks, sea grape leaves, shells, sand, coconuts — you name it, we use it! Join us for after-school ocean art to transform these materials into beautiful works of art. We’ll head out to the beach first to collect what we need and then finish back at campus. Come create with us!

No two beach walks are ever the same — each tide washes up treasure troves of new things to discover. We’ll explore the wrack line, dig in the swash, and search for seashells. Let’s comb the beach together after school!

Birding, or bird watching, is the observation of birds either as a fun activity or for scientific research. We’ll grab some binoculars and explore around the East end of Sanibel. We’ll learn to identify birds by call, plumage, flight patterns, and more. As the seasons change, so will our feathered friends — each session will be a hoot!
