Counselors Prepare for a Safe and Successful Summer

As we geared up for our busiest season of the year, the safety and well-being of every child who joins us for camp was a priority for staff training. While summer camp is filled with fun, exploration, and unforgettable experiences, those experiences are only possible because of the extensive preparation and training that takes place behind the scenes.
At the end of May, Sanibel Sea School staff participated in a three-day American Red Cross Lifeguarding course held at the Sanibel Recreation Center. This comprehensive training equips staff with critical skills in water safety, emergency prevention, recognition, and response. Counselors and educators also earned certifications in CPR, AED use, and First Aid, ensuring they are prepared to respond confidently and effectively should an emergency arise.

While water safety is a critical component of our work, protecting children extends beyond the shoreline. On June 4, we partnered with the Children’s Advocacy Center to host a Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children training for our staff. This nationally recognized, evidence-informed program provides adults with practical tools to help prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to child abuse. Through powerful survivor stories, expert insights, and actionable prevention strategies, the training empowers participants to play an active role in creating safer environments for children.
“While the subject matter can be difficult to discuss, one of the most effective ways we can protect children is by staying informed, educated, and prepared to act when concerns arise,” shared Sanibel Sea School Director Shannon Rivard. “We are excited for another incredible summer of learning and adventure, and I’m proud of the work our staff has put in to make it both memorable and safe.”
These formal trainings are just one part of Sanibel Sea School’s summer preparation. Before campers arrive, Summer Camp Counselors spend three weeks immersed in hands-on training alongside our full-time staff. They shadow programs, learn the Sanibel Sea School camp culture, become familiar with curriculum and daily operations, and participate in team-building activities that strengthen communication and collaboration.
This investment in training reflects our commitment to providing exceptional camp experiences while maintaining the highest standards of safety and care. As campers head out to explore the beach, discover marine life, and build lasting friendships this summer, families can feel confident knowing that a dedicated, well-trained team is prepared to support them every step of the way.
