Sun, Surf, & Science: A Look Back at Summer Camp 2024
This summer at Sanibel Sea School, we embraced the spirit of adventure and learning at our Homestead Campus while eagerly awaiting the reopening of our flagship location. Over the course of the season, we hosted 15 unique week-long camps, welcoming kids aged 4 to 17.
Each week of summer camp has its own theme and activities, but there are some things we do every week. In true Sanibel Sea School style, every day includes surfing, friendship, macramé, and team bonding.
We are so thankful for the passion and energy of our five seasonal counselors: Stella, Steve, Jake, Leeah, and Travis. Their enthusiasm helped create lasting summer memories, from face painting before surf competitions to leading epic games of Capture the Fish.
We could not have completed such a successful summer without our full-time Marine Science Educators, Austin, Annie, Izzy, and our newest addition – Jordyn! Their expertise and dedication continuously enhance our programs, and we inspire ocean love all year long!
Camp Highlights
Twinkle Twinkle Periwinkle Week
Sea Squirts – Ages 4-6
This summer, our youngest explorers embarked on a delightful adventure during Twinkle Twinkle Periwinkle Week. These miniature mollusks, no bigger than a penny, offered the perfect opportunity for our Sea Squirts to engage in hands-on learning.
Red, White, and Blue Crab Week
Island Skills – Ages 6-13
Blue crabs are the most beautiful iridescent blue you’ve ever seen. It’s no wonder their scientific name—Callinectes sapidus—translated from Latin means ‘beautiful savory swimmer.’ Mix that with fiery red tips on their claws and a shiny white belly; they were the perfect creature to celebrate over the 4th of July week! The campers even painted a massive blue crab, which was proudly featured in Sanibel’s Fourth of July Parade.
A Week in the Field Week
Teen Camp – Ages 13-15
“A Week in the Field” was a transformative experience for our teen campers, ages 13 to 15, who were eager to dive into the world of environmental research. Throughout the week, they worked alongside SCCF scientists, digging in the mud of mangrove forests, surveying shorebirds, combing early morning beaches in search of sea turtle nests, and much more. This camp was offered at no cost to campers.
As we wrap up Summer Camp 2024, we look back on a season filled with learning, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Thank you to all our campers and staff for making this summer one for the books. Until next time, keep spreading your ocean love!
