A Week in the Field: Empowering Future Conservationists
Last week, Sanibel Sea School hosted “A Week in the Field,” an inspiring camp designed to ignite a passion for environmental research among high school students. This transformative experience brought together eager young minds, ages 13 to 15, for an unforgettable week of hands-on conservation and research activities on the shores of Sanibel Island.
Daily Adventures and Hands-On Learning
Campers delved into diverse projects, ranging from digging in the mud in mangrove forests to surveying shorebirds on the coast. Early mornings were spent combing beaches for sea turtle nests, while afternoons involved water sampling, oyster measuring, and more. Working alongside SCCF’s dedicated scientists, the campers gained invaluable field experience, learned essential research techniques, and discovered how to communicate their findings effectively.
Funding and Accessibility
This camp was made possible by generous funding from the League of Environmental Educators in Florida (LEEF) and the Southwest Florida Association of Environmental Professionals (SWFAEP). By offering A Week in the Field at no cost to campers and providing transportation options, we aspire to enrich the lives of young individuals, fostering a love for science, nature, and the vital work of conservationists.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on this successful week, we are excited to see these young conservationists carry forward their newfound knowledge and passion. Together, we are shaping the future stewards of our planet, ready to tackle the environmental challenges of tomorrow.
A Week in the Field is a free, application-based camp. We’ll begin accepting applications for A Week in the Field 2025 in January.
